Train and bus

When travelling with Lokalbanen you need to use the same ticket system as used in the rest of the public transport system in the Greater Copenhagen area. Here we provide you with a quick overview of the tickets and travel cards which are relevant for you. They are all valid for both trains, buses and Metro. Some of them for specific periods and zones.

If you prefer not to worry about zones, read about the 24-hour ticket and CPH Card straight away.

Tickets and discount cards

Tickets can be purchased from ticket offices, from vending machines at stations or aboard on trains (depends on line) or from bus drivers. The tickets are stamped with time, date and departure zone. You pay for the number of zones you need, but the minimum fare is for 2 zones and the maximum for 9 (all) zones. Discount cards are available for 10 journeys within two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight or all zones. It is cheaper per journey to use a discount card than to buy a ticket.

When starting your journey with Lokalbanen, you must punch the card in the card-clipping machine aboard on the train. If you are starting your journey with bus, metro or other train lines than Lokalbanen, you must punch the card in a yellow card-clipping machine on the bus or at the station. One clip entitles you to travel within the number of zones printed on the face of the card. Several simultaneous clips extends your period of travel and increase the number of zones you can travel in. You can clip for a maximum of nine zones, which enables you to travel in all zones for a period of two hours.

When catching the night bus, you must pay double fare. This is also the case for the Metro between 1 a.m and 5 a.m.

All discount cards are available from manned stations and from Movia ticket offices. You can buy discount cards for two or three zones from most vending machines at stations or aboard on trains (depends on the line).

You must keep tickets and discount cards throughout the journey and present them to ticket inspectors on request.

Validity of tickets and discount cards:

2 - 3 zones: 1 hour
4 - 6 zones: 1 1/2 hours
7 - 8 zones and All (9) zones: 2 hours

The zone system

The Greater Copenhagen region is divided into 95 zones. Coloured zone maps have been posted at stations and bus stops. The red zone is the zone you are in and forms the basis of the calculation of the fare. The fare depends on the number of coloured zones (zone rings) you travel through. The most expensive colour zone determines the fare whether your journey ends here or you just pass through the zone. If you have any questions, you may ask the staff at the stations or the bus driver.

Children

Two children aged under 12 years travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult. One child aged under 12 travelling alone pays the child fare.
Children aged under 16 can buy either a child's ticket or a child's clip card for two or three zones. Two children aged between 12 and 15 years (both years inclusive) can travel together on an adult ticket or on one clip of an adult's clip card.

24-hour ticket

The 24-hour ticket offers you 24 hours of unlimited travel by train, bus and Metro throughout all the zones of the Greater Copenhagen region. The ticket should be clipped in the card-clipping aboard on a Lokalbanen train, in the yellow card-clipping machine on a bus or at the station when travelling with other lines than Lokalbanen.
One adult can bring along two children under the age of 12 years free.
The 24-hour ticket is available from Movia ticket offices and manned stations.

Flexcards 7-days

A FlexCard allows you unlimited travel by train, bus and Metro for seven days. The card is not personal and entitles the bearer to unlimited travel in the zones indicated on the card.
An adult may bring along two children under the age of 12 for free. Two children aged 12-15 (both included) may travel together on a FlexCard. Buy your FlexCard from Movia ticket offices and manned stations.

Tickets and cards are valid on all trains. However, on certain trains (for instance InterCity) you must pay a surcharge. For travels on Business Class, another supplementary ticket is required.
